Interlocking concrete pavers are becoming Ottawa homeowners’ go-to outdoor landscaping options. They are low maintenance as compared to poured concrete or gravel. Installed correctly, they are very durable and cost-effective. Pavers can adjust to the environment, and that only makes them more desirable. However, not all pavers have been installed correctly. At that point, you will need to have some repairs made by a reliable Ottawa interlock specialist.
Here are some of the signs that your pavers are in need of some TLC.
Sinking
Without the proper foundation, pavers will begin to sink into the ground. In this case, you will need to remove the pavers and to have the ground excavated from any materials that are subgrade. The area should be evened out and compacted. The degree of compaction depends on the use of the area that is covered in pavers. Pedestrian traffic should have between three and five inches of compaction, and vehicles should be from four to eight inches, depending on the weight and number of vehicles.
The surface is then compacted with a vibrating plate compactor using proper fill material. When the surface is smooth, the workers will add bedding sand and install edge restraints to keep the pavers from spreading. The new pavers can be laid, and finally, another set of vibrating compaction and the addition of masonry sand.
Sealing
Sealing pavers means you will be able to maintain the colour and finish for an extended period of time. It also helps prevent surface damage, including stains. Sealing should be handled at the installation and then repeated every three to five years.
Weeds and Critters
The space between the interlocking pavers is usually filled with sand. Over time this sand will erode or be washed away during the cleaning process, and weeds can pop through. Periodic replacement of that sand is easily handled.
Shifting
The pavers could shift if edging was not installed during the initial process. Even if there was edging, they could become uneven after freeze and thaw Ottawa winters. In this case, you will need to contact our office for someone to replace the edging and bring your area into alignment.
